We work to create or support programs that have an impact for animals and people, and then we constantly refine those programs to improve that impact.

Our programs and the programs we choose to support generally follow this recipe for success:

  • Have a clear vision.

  • Have a well-reasoned mission which outlines the general methods we will use to achieve our vision.

  • Identify the changes/outcomes in the world that would show our mission is having an effect. To the best of our ability, find measurements (Key Performance Indicators) of those outcomes that are attributable to our efforts. Where outcomes attributed to our efforts cannot by definition be clearly measured, identify precursor outcomes that are likely to lead to the desired final outcomes.

  • Set clear and measurable goals against those outcomes and KPIs, along with dates for goals to be complete. The best goals are hard, but not impossible to achieve, and it is understood not all goals may be met.

  • Set interim milestones that alert us as to whether we are or are not on track to meet our goals so we can adjust our efforts if needed.

  • Have an empowered and motivated staff who are accountable to everything above.

No climber reaches the summit of Mt. Everest without stating that is the goal, setting a date to arrive, and knowing the steps needed to get there. If you want to change the world, state what that change exactly is and work to achieve it.

We also support various new programs and organizations not yet ready for goal-setting, but that are innovative and untested, but likely to have an outsized benefit is they can succeed and grow.
